It is critical that Leaders cultivate direct communication from their employees, peers, and those around them.  However, this direct communication should be done:

–      In the Right Place

–      In the Right Way

When those around us provide us with this direct communication, it can be difficult for both parties because of several factors:

1. The Leader may receive information or advice he/she does not want to hear.
2. What is being asked may be incredibly difficult to accomplish.
3. The provider of the direct communication must take the risk in giving it.

Having this type of relationship can help leaders decide what to do when in tough situations.

• Do those around you feel comfortable giving you honest, direct feedback?

• Do you let those around you know the value of their support?

• What can you do differently next time you are in a tough situation to insure a better, improved outcome?
