In this week’s video blog our expert guide, Don Hadley, discusses the importance of communication and trust is when dealing with family conflict within a family business.
Family Businesses are typically second, third, and fourth generation owned businesses. When there is conflict within the family or the business there are certain things that must occur in order to prevent damage to the business and the relationships.
Communication and Trust
Stop and Count to 10 (actions and words) until:
Thoughts and Feeling are clear
Agreement on next steps, decisions, etc. can be made
Working through the conflict or disagreement
Values in Action are clear
Don’t react to emotion…but feel it and come to understand it
Prevent it from becoming worse by also continuing to develop other parts of the relationship
Pay attention to the big picture to know what really matters
Some questions to keep in mind when facing conflict within a team or family business:
When faced with a team or family conflict, what are the specific facts of the situation?
How does this conflict make each of you feel and what is the impact on each other and those around you (on the team or in the family)?
What actions can we agree upon to resolve the conflict? If we cannot agree, what are our next steps?
