The Strategic Photocopying Process–Do You Know Your Secret Sauce?
Great Results as Leaders With Questions and Metrics

Execution At Its Finest

We had a team of people from around the world who gathered for an overnight camping trip.  As they worked through several exercises, it became apparent that the style – the theme – of the team was that they were a team of doers and action takers.  While this is an important trait, it also creates problems.

By the end of the experience, it became clear that they need to start thinking collectively before taking action or “doing”.  With that in mind, the last few exercises they performed were exceptionally well done because the team started thinking together first, and then doing.  In fact, one exercise resulted in the best outcome that we had ever seen – with a solution that was very creative, unique and powerful.

This event was a success because the team was able to very clearly see the difference between doing without thinking and doing with pre-thinking.  We do not want them to lessen the action orientation or the doing; instead we want them to strengthen the thinking, planning, and supporting parts of their process and team.

Doing this will not only prevent problems more effectively, but they will also operate at an entirely different level, which is what they need to do to drive their market globally.

Some of the tactical methods to do this tactically are the following:

  • Emails are no longer from one person to another but cc: the whole leadership team
  • Engagement with each other occurs within the team, without needing the leader/owner to get them to talk to each other
  • The team is presenting ideas to the leader/owner that they collectively feel passionate about and are committed to
  • Checkpoints are clear on projects ahead of time (dates or events)
  • There is a written process for execution with reminders of wisdom learned from previous experience

While most organizations we work with have a lot going on and many challenges, we have found that getting outdoors away from their usual environment and doing learning, team building and skill exercises every 12 – 24 months is a powerful way to approach some of the “old problems” from a new perspective.

Like our team in the recent example above, it can take your team to a whole new level.  Getting outdoors can change your team paradigm.

  • When was the last time you got your team together?
  • When was the last time you changed the forum and the format for a new perspective?
  • What is the next big leap in capabilities that your leadership team needs to take?
