Yesterday I spoke to a divisional CEO who is frustrated because his boss does not have a clear vision of where they are going. It is obvious they want to grow the business, but there is no clear blueprint, schedule, materials list, specs, etc. for what it is they are building and how they are supposed to do it. For him, it makes it hard to know what is best to do and how to build, coach, direct his people and suppliers.
As I listened, I remembered how many business leaders we work with are working hard and perhaps smart, but their most important direct reports are unable to work smart since the roadmap, potential detours and milestones are unclear.
One client that has grown from one location to over 50 locations in the last 15 years called me after working with us for three years and thanked me for his “2nd honeymoon”. He said it was because without a clear vision and a clear business plan, he would not have taken some of the actions he did. Then his people would not have taken some of the long term actions they did, and he would not have been able to take his wife on a 2nd honeymoon…
