I was talking with amountain climber (and business leader) the other day. We were discussing how so many times people, teams, and businesses think that they “have got it” (whatever it is). Yet as he was talking about mountain climbing, he shared that many times during the climb there are “false peaks”. It looks like you are at the top but due to geography; you cannot see the real peak. As you get into a better position and can see the real peak, it is an awesome moving and motivating experience.
This relates to individuals, teams and organizations where they see a false peak and think they are there or almost there. Instead, they need to realize they can always get better and improve, and much of it can be very dramatic and major if they are open to it.
This is one reason we need to have “big mountains” to climb so we can learn to recognize the “false peaks” and punch through to a higher level of performance. How many people do you know that collect great information, but are unable to truly identify what it means and then drive action with the information towards a long term vision?
