I forget who said it, but I remember hearing the phrase “common sense is uncommon”.
Listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio the other week, he said “I sell common sense for a living and I get people to do it.” I thought it was insightful. While easy to say, it is exceptionally difficult to do. Most of our great clients, business leaders and their teams, are making a living by providing common sense and getting people to do it. It is a lifelong endeavor. It is a joy when we identify others that can do the same thing and bring them into our world to help us. As leaders, we are well paid when we do a good job at teaching common sense.
As leaders in our families, our job is to teach our children common sense and get them to do it. We are able to obtain great amounts of emotional income when we do this well in our families.
I can remember my grandfather sharing much common sense with me that without it, I would have looked pretty stupid. Usually when I did not listen to him, I did look pretty stupid. I wish he were around today to guide me…
Common sense can be taught. We need to expose people to the right experiences, people and wisdom to teach common sense.
