In every situation as we are getting to know people, we ask the question, “What is the most difficult situation you have ever been in and what did you learn from it?” The responses we hear give us a sense of the depth of the person, a sense of their values and insight into their maturity as a human being.
Part of what I have come to believe is that someone has not really “got it” until they are faced with a series of choices that are all bad, there is no good outcome, and yet they must choose. The willingness to do the best they can, demonstrate honor and integrity (which is not always apparent on the outside looking in) is a wonderful learning experience.
While I am not sure I would volunteer to go into a situation like that or want my children or friends to experience that, it is an important opportunity to “grow up” and learn about ourselves and real life. So, while I am not sure I would volunteer, I would go do it again because that has made me very much me. It has also made the very strong and good people around me quite resilient.
