The Simplest Way To Fix A Problem

Many times we as leaders see a problem and believe our job is to fix it.

We then go to the troops and explain to them, sell to them, why our solution is best.

Erasing

Part of what we have learned over the years, is that many times it is better to go to the troops and say, “Hey, we have this problem…We don’t know what to do about it. What do you think?” It is amazing how often a better answer is obtained. Even if they arrive at the same answer you would have, they then have buy in since they thought through the answers and it is their answer. The few occasions where you have to veto their solution and go with your own answer, they will feel better about.

Leaders Fixing

An example is that one company we work with had trouble making payroll. The owner got the company together and said, “Here is the problem. I am not sure what to do about it. What do you think?”

The answer he got from his employees was shocking. It was better than any answer he could have come up with on his own. They implemented the solution themselves as well. The company went on to become incredibly successful.

Three things to ask yourself when facing a problem or issue:

    • Have you gone to your organization’s leaders, teams, and employees to find a solution?
    • Does your organization have a way to track and encourage employees to solve problems rather than just bring them to your attention?
  • How can your leaders and organization increase the buy-in from employees to solve problems at a higher level?

If you would like to know the creative answer they came up with, call me on my cell phone at 919-368-9008 and I will let you know what they did.
