Leadership development is an issue facing many organizations today. In fact, in a recent survey we conducted it ranked as one of the top five concerns. A key component of leadership is the ability to engage your team so they see the entire fabric of what’s happening around them, not just their department or division. Much has been written on this topic, but one of the better leadership authors is John Maxwell.

As I was reading his books, I was struck by his formula for developing leaders:

  • Development is a long term process; prepare others for leadership along the way.
  • It is important to discover each person’s dreams and desires.
  • Everyone needs to be lead differently.
  • Organizational goals should be used for individual development.
  • Help others to know themselves.
  • Be ready to have a hard conversation.
  • Celebrate the right wins.

Leading by example is not good enough. Leading by example forces people to rely on what they see on the outside without understanding what is happening on the inside. Unless you want to develop leaders by accident, you MUST develop your own formula to teach all of the elements of what you believe a leader is in your organization.

Some questions to consider:

  • What is your formula for developing and engaging your leaders?
  • What would your team say is the process to becoming a great leader?
  • How do you ensure your team members are fully engaged as individuals and as a team?
