Cultures vs. Results

Every culture has its own personality.  It is important to define this personality clearly so that as new team members are added, they can quickly and easily progress to the “norming” and “performing” stages of the team.  Additionally, sometimes problems develop that are going against the grain of an existing culture, so it helps to know what the culture looks like in reality. If you are trying to change your culture, it is necessary that you define all important elements that currently exist in your culture.

In interviewing and working with cultures, teams, leaders and owners, we continue to find that many of the same issues arise.  All of these issues can be fixed, improved and prevented; however, it usually takes both a top down and a bottom up approach.  Many of these issues occur when organizations struggle with culture versus strategies for success.  During economic tough times like we are currently experiencing, organizations become much more focused on the bottom line results to keep the organization from losing money to preventing the business from going under completely.  While this is critical, the culture of an organization cannot be left unattended either.  To keep the forward progress moving forward, employees and leaders alike must feel the that they and their environment are just as important as that bottom line this is why we encourage organizations to combine the two and create a Results Culture.

Norm Brodsky, an Inc. 5000 columnist, says it best when he says “The most important job a leader has is to make sure that a culture is created within a company.  What you do for your employees, how you treat employees, how you treat customers, it’s all par of culture. Money isn’t the most driving force.  When you have a warm nurturing culture people like, they’ll stay with you.”

  • Does your organization have a supportive, nurturing culture that makes employees WANT to be there?
  • Are poor performers not held accountable?
  • Do your employees focus on what they are owed or what other employers do instead of what value they can bring to the organization?
