In this week’s video blog our expert guide, Don Hadley, discusses the similarities between a Strategic Plan and learning to fly and land an airplane.
While this sounds unusual, there are truths to be found in this analogy.
Strategic Plans provide a trajectory or path for individual and organizational goals. It not only allows there to be focus on the long term goal and success but also for the current situation. One of the most vital parts of a Strategic Plan is the behavior and actions taken now that will determine future results. So the question you are asking now is probably “So what does this have to do with flying or landing an airplane?”
When landing an airplane, a pilot must look to the end of the runway (the goal). While doing this, the pilot’s peripheral vision picks up on clues along the way to help guide him down the runway and know how to adjust his course accordingly. If the pilot just looks at the immediate part of the landing strip and not at the whole, the landing will become more treacherous, bumpy, etc.
Strategic Plans are very similar. You have to keep the end goal in sight while adjusting actions and behaviors to shape the now in order to reach the long term success.
Three things to keep in mind when working on your goals or your organization’s Strategic Plan:
