Organizations get new employees through hiring during the normal course of organic growth of the business or by acquiring companies. When this happens, there is typically a focus on the experience, knowledge and training of employees when they are hired as new employees or being screened in an acquisition.
But, stop for a moment and think about it: Why do we lose employees?
Over and over, companies hire someone with great experience, knowledge, training and a history of great results at other companies, yet, they fail at their new organization.
Or an acquisition is completed with a company, and the management team that comes over has great past results, experience, knowledge and training. Two years later, this team is gone and damage control must be done, along with realigning frustrated expectations.
When you ask the question, “Why do we lose employees?”, most often the answer is that it is a problem of the heart. Perhaps their values were different than those of their new employer. Attitudes can also get in the way due to personal situations or leftover resentment from a previous project. Whatever the reason, most often we see employees fail because of a problem of the heart.
This is why we, at AVW, are hired to increase retention or increase the number of “A” players, create a strategic plan, or help acquire an organization. Many times we are focusing on the hiring process (or a people audit in the case of an acquisition) and making sure that there is a search for and an understanding of the heart of the new people as well as a sharing of the heart of the people and culture of the new organization.
Without that, it is truly impossible to tell if there is a good fit.
Additionally, we must complete several tasks with organizations that include employee evaluations, coaching and training to include “heart checks” to make sure that everyone is still in alignment with each other and the organization.
If you have not done so recently, make sure that your hiring, orientation, training, evaluation and advancement programs all have a heart check included and that it is being used.
