Today our Expert Guide, Don, speaks about bringing together 2 generations of employees in an organization. It can be a challenge for many organizations to communicate and function with 2 very distinct generations working together.

As the newer and younger generation take on leadership responsibilities, they become an integral part of changes, ideas and adding value to the team and organization.  This can cause the older generation to wondering where they bring value.

A great way to approach this type of dynamic would be to associate these groups with 2 things.Heart

The first would be the Heart.  The Heart is responsible for bringing oxygen, nutrients and essential fluid throughout the body.  This is what the older generation provides to the organization through its knowledge, experience, values, and spiritual guidance.

Head

The second would be the Head.  The Head is responsible for providing and processing data, directing the arms and legs, etc.  This is what the new, younger generation provides to the organization through its new ideas, changes, etc.

An organization’s value is not held in area or with one generation or group of employees.  To continue to thrive and succeed, it must utilize the value throughout the organization that all the unique individuals bring together.

Questions to ask yourself and your organization about the Heart & Head of your organization:

  • Does each of your employees know the value that they provide?
  • Does each have written job descriptions to pass on to the next generation?
  • Does your organization have a plan for “Passing the Torch” to the next generation?
