In this week’s video blog our expert guide, Don Hadley, discusses accomplishing something.
Many leaders and teams when attempting something new will ask the question “How do we accomplish this?” There can be a fear of not being successful, or the fear of the new skill sets and capabilities, or the fear of the impact this new process, product, etc. may have on the organization.
Leaders and teams typically want things to occur in a certain way or to go perfectly. This desire causes them to not “do” or implement or accomplish the task/project at hand. We have found over the last 30 years that the most successful teams and organizations are the ones that think through the process to 70-80% complete, then implement. This causes them to learn and tweak as they go. These teams figure out the how, get the buy-in, implement, then monitor and improve along the way. The important piece though is that they do and take action.
The teams and organizations that we see failing are those that take too much time calculating how, when, the perfect timing, etc. No actions are taken or when they are, it’s too late and failure occurs.
