I used to think that when there was a teachable moment for others, when there was time on their part and mine, and they were open to learning new things, I should teach…

Wrong!

I have learned that when an exciting opportunity or a potential crisis occurs, there is a need that others have.  They must handle the opportunity or the crisis!  They have a need to learn and perceive it, so I may be able to teach them.

I have also learned that when others are moving quickly, because of an opportunity or crisis, or perhaps their “perceived need” to move quickly, slowing them down to consider more powerful ways to highly impact a result may be a chance for the teachable moment.

I have also learned that responding to a teachable moment well does NOT mean issuing my opinion.  More often than not, if I want to be very powerful, it is composed of a few thoughtful questions.

• The more I have looked for teachable moments, the more I find them, but so often, they are not where I thought they would be…

• They are not made up of opinions to be issued, but questions to be asked…
