In this week’s video blog our expert guide, Don Hadley, discusses the value of being open minded to new ways of doing things, new information, and new experiences.  People with hardening of the categories may have:

–   HIGH education but LOW experience (e.g. PhD’s with limited real world jobs)

or

–   HIGH experience and capabilities with resistance to new ways of doing things.

The biggest obstacle we face as guides and as leaders are those individuals who are not open minded.  Many times those individuals with high experience find it difficult to focus on any data that is not relatable, causing them to be close minded.

Some things to consider the next time you are faced with hardening of the categories:

• Do you have hardening of the categories?

• Does anyone on your team need more open mindedness?

• Are you actively teaching, training and coaching your people to avoid hardening of the categories?
