While doing interviews with clients and employees, the biggest issue we have to tackle is fear. It is a huge problem for teams and businesses. Fear makes individuals look inward to think and rather than taking responsibility, they begin looking outward for reasons to explain their issues. This is non-productive and leads to blame, more excuses and causes inaction. Once fear has a hold, it robs us of our power and strength.
Our job is to help clients overcome fear, get teams and individuals focused on a vision and on fighting battles that are worth fighting. This must start at the grass roots level with every leader, one by one taking responsibility for doing what they can do.
Risk is a normal part of life; you need people willing to take a risk, to try something different to cause change. Without it, your organization is doomed, either in short term or in the years to come. Iveta Cherneva, Human Rights Officer and author, sums it up well, “Only those who play win. Only those who risk, win. History favors risk-takers. Forgets the timid. Everything else is commentary.”
Keep your vision clear and you can prevent the “fog” of fear.
