In a recent discussion with Joe Young of Waypoint, we were talking about becoming experts. He indicated that it takes about 500 hours of doing something to really become good at it in other words, an expert. While the amount of time may depend on the topic (i.e. nuclear physics vs. woodcarving), he was making the point that our most valuable commodity is time.

Most of our time is spent on who we are now. Joe calls this “Expense Time”. It is reinforcing, doing, being who we are now. Perhaps brushing our teeth, doing our taxes, etc. are examples of this “Expense Time”.

The 2nd type of time is “Capital Time”. It is investing in who we are becoming. It is our future self. It is what we want to be at our best. It broadens and deepens our horizons.

If it takes 500 hours to become an expert, then if we “invest” 30 minutes a day in “Capital Time” (i.e. learning something new that will make us an expert), we are investing time in the person that we want to become. With 30 minutes a day, in about 3 years we will have become an expert on something.

Some questions to consider:

• What would you be willing to invest 30 minutes a day in to become an expert?
• What expertise would get you closer to your future best self?
• How can you help those around you become their best selves?
